Weird Or Confusing – Buy Ridiculous Stuff Off The Internet.October 3, 2016
Welcome to The Cake,
the Baked Network blog, here we share some of our favourite stories, websites, videos and generally anything that interests us or catches our attention.
Welcome to our post on 10 of the top creepiest and weirdest websites on the Internet.
Before you proceed, we have to warn you that some of the material found in these sites may be extremely disturbing to some viewers and may also contain flashing images.
However the sites we have chosen are not solely created to scare you. Some websites were selected for this list solely based on their creativity and they appear to have no obvious objective other than to exist. Either way you are in for a mind bending journey through the frightening and obscure.
#1. Blair Witch
With Halloween just around the corner and 'Blair Witch' currently screening in cinemas around the world, we thought it was only fair to feature the Blair Witch Experience on this list.
This immersive interactive game is an area on their website and is well worth a look for its subtle atmospherics and the tension it manages to create. Recommended you play with headphones or with the volume high, as in true Blair Witch style it relies heavily on sound to create an atmosphere.
WARNING: Not for the faint hearted. It will scare the crap out of you.
#2. Creepy Girl
CUBOCC are a creative advertising agency and the creators of this creepy CGI female who features on this website. The experience is slightly unnerving as the virtual woman is ultra realistic and there is not much explanation for it.. Check it out here.
There is no real explanation for this site but perhaps that is the point. The animations and writings will have you saying “WTF” over and over again. And even the forum it provides for people to discuss these questions leaves the question we’re all asking unanswered. “WHY??”
Call it a game, a community or art, the value of NobodyHere.com really lies in the fact that it is all, and none of the above all at the same time. Regardless of the mental turmoil it may create within you. The effects of exploring the website are actually quite calming and fulfilling.
#4. Bongcheon-Dong Ghost
The Bongcheong Dong Ghost is a webcomic written and illustrated by Korean web cartoonist Ho-Rang, and was his entry in the Naver Webtoons 2011 Mystery Short Contest.
Having never read a Webtoon before this was a new experience for me but Bongcheon-Dong Ghost immediately took me back to the comic book reading days of my childhood. But the way the story unfolds before you is different, unique, and an unnerving experience.
One of my favourite websites on this list is a project by Nikolaus Baumgarten. An infinitely zooming image illustrated by a number of different contributors.
The result is ZoomQuilt, a beautiful flowing journey through the imaginations of these artists. My only wish is there were more of these online.
#6. Hashima Island
This 16 acre former coal mining island sits about 15 kilometers (9 miles) from the city of Nagasaki, in southern Japan. Once boasting a population of over 5000 in 1959 by 1974 the mine was closed and all residents departed the island shortly afterwards
On June 27th 2013, Google released street view photographs of the forgotten world and the subsequent exploration of Hasima Island is a truly immersive experience.
Not for everyone this one. Larry Carlson is a psychedelic multimedia artist,. He has created Medijate | The Ministry Of Happinesswhat can only be described as an audio / visual digital interpretation of his art.
Whilst providing regular contact and links areas of this website. The rest is arguably open to interpretation but expect an onslaught of psychedelic colours animation and strange hypnotising audio.
WARNING: Contains Flashing Images.
#8. This Man?
ThisMan.org is a very strange and frankly scary website. the story is only 10 years old and goes like this.
In 2006 a patient of a well-known psychiatrist draws the face of a man that has been repeatedly appearing in her dreams. The portrait lies on the psychiatrist's desk and a few days later another patient recognises the man from their dreams. The psychiatrist sends the portrait to some of his colleagues and within a few months, some of their patients recognise the man from their own dreams. Since 2006 thousands of people from all over the world claim to see this man in their dreams. Have you seen This Man?
Created by Dutch digital artist Han Hoogerbrugge and inspired by his original comic strip the Modern Living / Neurotica series. ‘Nails’ was a project which lasted for years between 2002 and 2007 and features Hans as the main character through 27 interactive animations.
The result is a confusing social commentary which is abstract, scary and entertaining.
#10. Staggering Beauty
Search the world wide web for long enough and you will reach the far depths of the internet where you will discover
No explanation for why it exists but there really doesn't need to be one. After a short time of gently waving the mouse left and right, it's only natural to want to vigorously shake the mouse and the result is similar to losing yourself at a Larry Carlson party.
WARNING: Contains Flashing Images
That concludes our list of the 10 scariest and most obscure websites you can visit. (Without instantly being put on the FBI watch list). You can breathe now.. I suggest you take a walk, speak to a family member or hug a dog. Some of these websites my not use obvious horror conventions, gore or jump scares. But the sheer existence of some of these sites is questionable and unsettling. So this Halloween, you don't need to venture to any abandoned houses or graveyards to feel scared. Just go on the Internet.
